How to pace it.

Even pace, raced on feel

Sub 18 is too fast to wing. The pace (3:36/km) has to come out of sessions like 5–6×1 km at goal pace or 6×800 m slightly quicker, so that race pace feels familiar rather than shocking. On the day, get to 3:36 per km within the first 400 m and then stop looking at the watch — at this speed you race the runners around you and the effort in your chest, not the GPS, which lags badly on tight bends. Expect the third kilometre to feel like the wheels are coming off; that is normal and it passes. Anything left in the last 600 m goes into a long, committed drive to the line.

What blows it up.

Letting a fast starter drag you through the first km in 3:25 — that 10-second overdraft is unpayable at this intensity.

Under-warming up. A sub-18 effort needs 15–20 minutes of jogging plus strides so you are aerobically ready from the gun.

Doing all your training as flat-out parkruns instead of structured intervals at goal pace.

Racing a twisty or multi-lap course on GPS pace, which reads slow on the corners and tempts you to surge.

Neglecting strength and turnover work, so your form falls apart when fatigue hits at 3 km.
